The first years of life are crucial for a child’s healthy development. Balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, and physical activity build a strong foundation. Just as important is for the child to grow in a safe and loving family environment that supports their social-emotional growth.
The most important factor at every stage remains the parent — biological or not.
What child development means
Child development includes several key areas:
- Gross and fine motor skills – movement, first steps, grasping, drawing.
- Social–emotional development – expressing feelings, building relationships.
- Cognitive development – thinking, curiosity, problem-solving.
- Language and communication – first words, sentences, interaction.
- Every child has their own pace, but these areas outline the general framework of growth. Small steps — like waving goodbye or trying to grab a toy — form the “foundation” on which future skills are built.
The role of parents in monitoring development
- Parents are the first to notice changes or delays. They observe not only height and weight, but also when the child begins to smile, babble, or form sentences.
These observations are invaluable for pediatricians and specialists. If the child is cared for by others (grandparents, babysitters, kindergarten teachers), their impressions matter too.
What screening is and why it matters
- Screening is professional monitoring of development. It is performed by pediatricians, psychologists, or child-development specialists using standardized questionnaires and playful assessments that create no stress for the child.
In Bulgaria, tools such as ASQ®, Denver II, or DESK 3–6 R are available to evaluate different areas of development. If concerns arise, specialists may recommend deeper evaluation or additional support. - The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends regular screening at 9, 18, and 30 months, and more frequently for children with risk factors. In Bulgaria this often happens after a parent raises a concern.
Ages 3 to 6 — a key period
- At this age, children develop their speech, communicate more actively with peers and adults, refine their movements, and expand their imagination. Play, drawing, and storytelling are not just entertainment — they are essential tools for learning and development.
Why early intervention matters
- If there are concerns about delays, the best step is consulting a specialist. Early intervention can help a child reach their full potential. The earlier difficulties are detected, the more effective the support.
